Hurricanes Designate Seth Jarvis To Injured Non-Roster List

The Carolina Hurricanes will be without a core player for the start of the 2026-27 season. Winger Seth Jarvis has been placed on the injured non-roster list per NHL.com’s Walt Ruff. He is recovering from a shoulder surgery performed in June. The surgery repaired a torn labrum and rotator cuff.

Jarvis was set to miss between four-and-six months to rehab the injury. This update falls in-line with that timeline, which could place Jarvis out of the lineup for the first half of the season. He was said to be ahead-of-schedule in his recovery when Carolina opened training camp, per NHL.com’s Kurt Dusterberg, though he could still miss multiple weeks.

Jarvis has been as steady as can be over the last three seasons. He scored 67 points in both the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, then posted a team-leading 32 goals en route to 66 points last year. Few players are as sure of a bet to finish the year in the realm of 30 goals and 60 points, though Jarvis’ spot in the top-six carries much more weight. He has averaged 19 minutes of ice time throughout the last three seasons and earned Selke Trophy votes in every year. Jarvis has also averaged 47 shot blocks and 105 hits per 82 games in that span – impressive tenacity for a 5-foot-10, 180-pound winger.

That tenacious play is beginning to catch up to Jarvis. His shoulder injury dates back to the 2023-24 season, though Jarvis opted to play through it ever since. He kept on track – occasionally missing games – en route to a Silver Medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics and his first Stanley Cup win last season. Jarvis finally opted to go under the knife for his injury this summer, spurring a long-term recovery.

Despite losing a summer to healing, this summer was likely the best chance for the 24 year old to address his injury. Jarvis is set to enter year-three of an eight-year, $59.36MM contract signed with Carolina ahead of the 2024-25 season. He is a core component of the Hurricanes’ top line, when healthy, and should be in a better position to sustain that role after a lengthy healing process.

Carolina will face a tough question for how to replace Jarvis until he returns. The line of Taylor Hall, Logan Stankoven, and Jackson Blake was an X-factor for the Hurricanes throughout their Cup-winning season. Keeping them together would mean elevating either Nikolaj Ehlers or Eric Robinson to the top line, next to Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho.

Saturday’s preseason game didn’t support finding the top line option. Felix Unger Sorum skated next to Svechnikov and Aho, while Ehlers filled his usual role on the third-line and Robinson skated on the fourth-line. Unger Sorum was assigned to the AHL earlier on Sunday, after recording one assist in Carolina’s 6-0 win on Saturday.

It seems likely that Ehlers will stick on his usual line, next to Jordan Staal and Jordan Martinook, while Robinson sees a boost in minutes. Ehlers scored two points in Saturday’s matchup – banking on a chemistry that could help Carolina roll their lines early in the season. The 31-year-old Robinson scored 12 goals and 18 points in 67 games with the Hurricanes last year. His 2024-25 campaign in Carolina currently stands as his career year, marked by 14 goals and 32 points in 82 games.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi, William Carrier, and Nicolas Deslauriers will compete for the wing roles on Carolina’s fourth-line to enter the season. One of the two to earn a role will likely step back out of the lineup once Jarvis returns.
